ABOUT CONGRESS
The Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest multidisciplinary academic gathering in Canada, attracting delegates from every corner of Canada and around the world. Steeped in over 75 years of tradition, Congress is a gathering of researchers, scholars and students in the humanities and social sciences, leading public intellectuals, authors, artists and many more.
Congress 2009 — Capital Connections: nation, terroir, territoire
The theme Capital Connections: nation, terroir, territoire invites an exploration of identity as physical space; the space of a people, a nation, and their historic ‘terroir.’ It asks the question: has globalization produced a sea-change in our understanding of the relationship between place and who we are? This theme provides a rich backdrop for the conference agenda, highlights of which are the Research in Society lecture series, a suite of lectures featuring internationally distinguished academics, and the Breakfast on Campus speaker series, morning lectures given by prominent public figures — novelists, poets, journalists, artists — from outside academe.
Join us in our nation’s capital
Beautiful, multilingual and home to many well respected political, cultural and research centres, Ottawa, Ontario provides an inspired setting for Congress 2009. Join us at Carleton University from May 23 through May 31, 2009.
An intellectual festival
Congress celebrates intellectual life in Canada. It brings together new and established academics and researchers from diverse studies such as ethics, the history and philosophy of science, international development, political science, social work, communications, literature, geography, theatre and religion, and many more. Congress provides a forum for the very best of Canada’s researchers to share their innovative ideas and debate contemporary social and cultural questions through workshops, panels and presentations organized by over 70 participating scholarly associations.
